While the bulk of this issue of Et Al. sees me wandering amongst the dramas, romances and westerns of the thirties and forties, its climax is an unintended Leslie Nielsen double bill. Leslie in a tuxedo, Leslie on the dance-floor, Leslie gets some lovin’, Leslie kicks some butt. It’s more Leslie Nielsen than one woman can handle!

Leslie Nielsen is the friggin’ man! Let’s see: he’s the greatest of all spoof movie actors, was in one of the quintessential 50s Sci-Fi flicks, Day of the Animals, and a bunch of other stuff, that’s what I call a career.

Anyone who plans to murder Evel Knievel in a moronic plan to smuggle drugs into the country is jake in my book.
#3 by JessicaR on September 22nd, 2008
Not to mention part of said plan to be to shoot Gene Kelly full of smack leaving him raving mad in a padded cell. I laughed until I cried the first time I saw that scene.

All this, and grizzly bear wrassling too! They just don’t make men like that any more….

Grizzly bear wrassling without a shirt no less. Indeed, a man among men.
I mean, not even Timothy Treadwell tried that $%!+.
#6 by Baron Scarpia on September 23rd, 2008
But then, Treadwell had a documentary made about him by Werner Herzog. For me, that earns him serious brownie points.

When someone says “They don’t make men like that anymore” while referring to Leslie Nielsen could only mean that the commies have already won.
#8 by The Rev. D.D. on September 23rd, 2008
Well, commies live in Australia, don’t they? I mean, they’re practically neighbors to the Evil Empire. Ms. Kingsley can see Russia from her hours, right?
(Man, ugly American joke AND timely political reference that is ALSO a pop culture callback! I am on FIRE!!!)
I have to admit, getting a Herzog documentary is pretty keen. Maybe I should go live alone in Alaska for a decade-plus and take videos and photos of wildlife and be a little bit crazy.
Except I’ll be the Fox Man. Not as exciting, I grant you, but much cuter, not to mention a significantly lower risk of being killed and partially eaten by my subjects.

Shot running for the van during a night raid on a suburban rubbish bin.

I think I’d rather be the Walrus Man.

“In tragic news todat, El Santo was found dead, his body crammed into a blue bukket….”
