Judging from the harsh words I’ve read from movie reviewers and regular moviegoers for the 1999 movie BATS, nobody was wanting a sequel… except me, who found the movie somewhat watchable in a brainless way and as a nostalgic throwback to all those 1970s mad-animal-on-the-loose movies… if you paid little to nothing to see it. Now we have the sequel BATS: HUMAN HARVEST, and you can read if I got what I deserved or not. As a bonus, you’ll learn about how you can tell if a movie from Sony stinks or not.

Hey, I know *I* did. And probably Ken.
For what it’s worth, Bats is one of those films that I’ve grown very fond of retrospectively. I don’t think it’s any better than I ever did, but it’s such an old-fashioned throwback of a movie that it has finally won me over. Those rubber bat puppets are just so gosh-darn cute! And, you know, THAT line of dialogue. I’ve been meaning to review it properly for a while now.
Somehow, I just knew they would be….

THAT line of dialogue
Let me guess. Would this be a certain line about a scientist’s motivations in life?
I found the film a laugh riot, to be honest. How on earth can you take a film seriously when it starts the way Bats does?

I think I’m more apt to say that nobody (or at least, me) wants sequels to films that are already basking peacefully in the glory of their “classicness.” For films that nobody (or few people) liked, there’s always that hope that they’ll manage to improve upon their predecessor. Look at the “Witchcraft” series, according to El Santo, they were able to churn out something tolerable after five or six tries.

That sound slike the ol’ crap anime series defense. “Well, the first eighty-seven episodes are really bad, but the last three are pretty awesome, so I rate it 9/10.” If they first eighty-seven episodes are bad, your series is bad.
And it’s not so much that i didn’t want a sequel to BATS as it never occurred to me that there would be one. Now if you told me you were watching a sequel to Kaw, then there’d be some trouble in town.

Although I think it’s a slight bit different for a series that is divided into episodes but rated as a whole, as opposed to a movie franchise (especially where no continuity really exists), where each film can be judged on its own merits…or something. You’re right, a miserable series is a miserable series. But for movies, it’s easier for the gold (or pyrite) to stand tall above its companions rather than 1 episode in a 40-80 episode series.
