Hey, cool! Another DVD release I can embarrass myself over in public!
On October 28th, Grindhouse will release a double-disc Collector’s Edition of Juan Piquer’s Mil Gritos Tiene La Noche / Pieces. This will be uncut and widescreen anamorphic, with an optional Spanish soundtrack featuring the original score by Librado Pastor.
After Metropolis, this probably only counts as a minor miracle, but who’s complaining? Severin Films will be producing the first official DVD release of Mario Caiano’s Amanti D’Olltretomba / Nightmare Castle, starring Barbara Steele, after a good quality, uncut negative of the film was discovered in a storage vault in Rome.
This just in! On July 29th, Warners will be releasing a trio of science fiction double-bills: World Without End + Satellite In The Sky (I’ve always felt that was a good place for a satellite); When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth (yo, Keith!!) + Moon Zero Two; and Battle Beneath The Earth + The Ultimate Warrior. The bad news for those of us who don’t happen to live down the street from the Brothers Warner is that these releases will be Best Buy exclusives. Thank Jabootu for eBay.

Frankly, I’m not sure, as I’ve only seen the butchered version. However, I’d be prepared to bet there’s a Video Watchdog out there with our names on it; I’ll see if I can dig it out. Meanwhile, speaking of Tim Lucas:
“NIGHTMARE CASTLE was the abortive US cut of Caiano’s film, which was bluntly shortened by a couple of reels; it was the worst, most incoherent importation of any Italian horror film EVER — so bad, in fact, it ought to be preserved alongside the original cut for posterity’s sake. As for THE FACELESS MONSTER, it was the title given to a more complete but still censored version issued in the UK.”

Thank you thank you Lyz, or I would have missed these entirely. When Dinosaurs and Moon Zero Two are two of my most wanted Hammer films on decent DVD. And Ultimate Warrior and Nightmare Castle are not exactly unwelcome. And me, working right across the street from a Best Buy…!

Isn’t Piquer the guy responsible for Pod People and Slugs?
Based on that, I have no reason to believe this movie is worthy of two discs…
That other stuff looks mighty fine, though.

The cover art for the Warners sets is up at DVD Drive-in - along with some ominous rumbling about the running-time of When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth. Stay tuned.

Jeez, MGM shipped like one copy of each DVD to the Best Buys in New York. I went to four of them this week and had no luck at any of them.

What’s the difference between the Nightmare Castle I dled from the Internet Movie Archive and the uncut version? More torture? Drawn-out sex scene? Nudity?
