Numb (2006) is a dystopian tale of futuristic drug addicts. It’s also a self-conscious indie film, which means that it’s shot in black and white, and features scenes out of chronological order with characters talking to each other about what a craphole the world has become. Welcome to the future!

Self-conscience?

The best kind of conscience to have. Shut up.

What is the strong force that pulls you in the direction of Full Moon films and these seemingly pretentious independent and/or micro-budget films?
#5 by Nathan Shumate on June 19th, 2008
Entirely different ones. The pulling force toward the Full Moon films is a book I’m co-writing; the only pulling force toward most of the recent microbudgeters is that they emailed me and asked if they could send a screener. (Oddly enough, that’s also why I’ve been doing so many forgotten westerns and noirs recently; I’m on VCI Entertainment’s screener list, and they’ve loaded me up with boxed sets.)

I got invited to review a screener back in 2006 when I was reviewing more consistently. Kind of curious now to know what sort of doors that would’ve opened up had I accepted the challenge.

*kicks ground, stuffs hands in pockets* No one ever sends me screeners.

They don’t want to interrupt you.

Nathan, I’m sorry. Blame Ken for the problem: if he published more, I would be able to use my proofreading energies for good instead of evil.

I blame Ken for most problems: the gasoline price hike, the Korean War, the heartbreak of psoriasis…

Hang on – the DVD case compares the film to Stalker? To Stalker? Oh, that just deserves a smack.

Ken was responsible for season 2 of Buck Rogers, and shot a man in Reno just to watch him die…

No, he shot a man NAMED Reno. Big difference.

Reno Dakota, Ken? Oh, there’s not an iota of kindness in you.

That was Reno Dakota, the Minnesota Mauler, from Cleveland.
